The first incarnation of the band was in spring 2005 when several members of the Ugie folk club were coerced – in the nicest possible way of course – into forming a ceilidh band to assist with a fund raising event for the local village hall. After weeks of rehearsal a very nervous group took to the stage and provided a wonderful evening’s entertainment. The early outings were mostly of a similar nature with the band serving its apprenticeship playing the charity gig circuit which proved to be a sound learning ground with a growing and appreciative audience. It was at one of these early events when the band were supporting Fiona Kennedy and still looking for a name, she suggested using the name of the song Bratach Bana which was made so popular by her father Callum.

Since these early beginnings Bratach Bana have built a formidable reputation as a polished band of musicians who find themselves in increasing demand with steady gig work and festival appearances. With there first album Shetland Lights selling well, the band are well through the process of preparing for the production of their second album which they hope to release in the spring of 2009.
