Short Biography:
I have been interested in folk music for as long as I can remember, mainly thanks to my family’s interest in Scottish music, singing and dancing and especially my late Uncle Jim’s fiddle playing.  He first encouraged me to take up a musical instrument at around the age of 7 when I started lessons on the fiddle.  My parents then encouraged me to start keyboard lessons too (age 10).  During my time at secondary school, I started piano lessons and learned to play drum kit, timpani, xylophone and guitar.  I also sang in the school’s Vocal Ensemble which taught me all I know about harmony singing and about singing in general.  I started competing at folk festivals in my teens and was fortunate enough to pick up a range of prizes for singing.  This was a great experience and great for confidence-building!  However, it has really been my involvement with the Ugie Folk Club and everyone in it (known as the Longside Folk Club when I joined back in 1994-ish) that has enabled me to improve my singing and playing abilities and has shown me that folk music is the most enjoyable form of music in the known universe!
